If it is a choice between bread sauce and dogshit then count me as a yes.

I've never really been able to get my head round bread sauce. The idea of pouring warm milk and soggy breadcrumbs over roasted meat just seems odd to me. I'd go gravy or cranberry sauce and stuffing every time instead.

As we don’t appear to have any ‘consultants’ on ‘six-figure salaries’ handy, can I just say that it doesn’t go at all well with either the foie-gras or the caviar.

Absolutely delicious. Always have it with roast chicken or turkey. I'm the only one who eats it so I eat the whole lot. Very nice with grouse too!

defjam - that reminds me of that joke about a group of Indian youth going to an English restaurant and asking for the blandest thing on the menu.

If you are far too cool and sophisticated for Bread Sauce, then Pease Pudding is obviously your go-to accompaniment.

Always was a no for me, Was something weird your parents liked and it looked as bland as it sounded. But since learning how to make it properly it is now a highlight of the dinner.

No surprise Mr Meals on Wheels enjoys a bit of bread sauce. Proper pensioner shit.

Re: Bread sauce?
My kids adored it with Sunday lunch although I think that might have been because sauce making was their contribution to the meal as they seemed to like almost every sauce we had.

I do like it, but it needs to be with the right meal - roast beef, rather than roast pork or lamb, for instance.

I don't get it.
Not sure a splat of almost tasteless sludge adds much to a roast.

Exeter,

Good bread sauce doesn't need parsley.
It stands on its own as a part of the dinner, and to me is more important than the gravy.

I can see how some of the ingredients in it might add something to certain roasts, for instance the parsley.

but as a whole?

Why does the parsley need to have the host of that tasteless white stodge stuff? just sprinkle a bit on instead?

Strikes me as being served up a top notch pudding/dessert/afters* (* i don't want to start that debate again), and then pouring porridge all over it, as the sprinkling of nutmeg IN the porridge might add to what was already on your plate.

possible that I'm over thinking this.

Fair enough. I suppose that means that in culinary terms it wasn't your mother's pride?
